Being Holy In An Unholy World

holy 1

You meet a lady at a party, you offer her several alcoholic drinks. She tells you,”thank you for the offer, but I don’t take alcohol, please give me some soft drinks.”Moreover, she won’t take any hard drugs. You wonder what kind of a person this is in this day and age.

You are in high school, college or  employment, you notice most girls have boyfriends and they are having pre-marital sex .They are not worried because they use morning after pills,if the worst happens, their best option is procuring an abortion. But here you are,you are through with school, are employed,do not have a boyfriend and you are a virgin.

You are working in a government office, everyone is doing it,and they get away with it,but you have never taken a bribe, instead you are contemplating to leave that office.

You have a boyfriend who has sent you his nude photos, you are wondering whether to send yours to him too.The last time you were with him he showed you some porn videos.but your conscious is very clear.Just last Sunday your pastor preached about not sinning sexually because your body is the dwelling place of the Holy Spirit.

This is the kind of world that we are living in.To make it worse, you find some people mocking you about your lifestyle, they tell you, nowadays you just have to take a little bribe,or to have an affair if you are tired of your spouse. But,God  tells us several times in the Bible  to be holy because He is holy.

1 Peter 1:15-16

15 But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; 16 for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”[a]

Then you wonder, how can I be holy in an unholy world?

It is possible to be holy because God commands us to be holy.He knows that it is possible.

He expects us to be holy,as seen in the verse above and in the following verses.

1 Peter 2:9

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. 10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Romans 12:1-2

12 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Ephesians 5:18

 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

Romans 6:11-14

11 In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. 12 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. 13 Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness. 14 For sin shall no longer be your master, because you are not under the law, but under grace.

Philippians 2:12-13

12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed—not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence—continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.

1Thessalonians 4:3-4

It is God’s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality; that each of you should learn to control your own body[a] in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the pagans, who do not know God; and that in this matter no one should wrong or take advantage of a brother or sister.[b] The Lord will punish all those who commit such sins, as we told you and warned you before. For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life. Therefore, anyone who rejects this instruction does not reject a human being but God, the very God who gives you his Holy Spirit.

Romans 8:29

29 For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.

2Corinthians 7:1

Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God.

2 Tim:2:21

20 In a large house there are articles not only of gold and silver, but also of wood and clay; some are for special purposes and some for common use. 21 Those who cleanse themselves from the latter will be instruments for special purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.

Now we know that holiness is a requirement for every christian.

What can one do to be holy?

Here are seven things that you need to do to be holy.

1.You  need to be in the right relationship with God.

You do this by believing in Jesus Christ as your Lord and personal         Savior, after which he cleanses you and sets you apart for righteousness. You also need to turn away from habits that are not pleasing to him,as mentioned in the verses above.Instead live a life that glorifies Him.

2.You should be prayerful.

Being prayerful brings you closer to God.Through prayer, you will not only talk to God,but you will also listen to Him.

3.You should study the word of God every day.

Apart from knowing the scriptures well, studying the Bible regularly cleanses us.The Lord uses his word to clean and purify us from the filthy stuff of this world.

       John 17:17

Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth

4.We should not follow the pattern, styles and fashion of this world.

Romans 12:2 above indicates very clearly that we don’t have to be/look like everyone else.We are supposed to be different.

5.We should not allow sin to control us.

From Romans 6:12 above,we see that sin can reign over us,but this is  only if we allow it to.

One way to avoid sin is to escape from it as soon as you see the early signals.Sin does not happen overnight. You can follow Joseph’s example from Genesis 39,when he ran away from Potiphar’s wife who wanted to commit adultery with him. When you resist the devil, he will flee away from you.James 4:7

6.Make covenants with your body parts.

Job made a covenant with his eyes that he would not look at a young woman with lust.Job:31:1

You can as well make a covenant with your eyes not to look at naked people on the phone/computer/magazines;You can also covenant with your hands not to touch that which does not belong to you.

7.We need to guard our hearts.

Proverbs 4:23.

23 Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.

We watch our hearts by controlling what we see, hear, basically its controlling our environment. What are you watching on T.V,what books and magazines are you reading, what kind of music are you listening to?

Therefore we see  that it is possible for every believer to live a holy life that is pleasing to God.Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith.

Building meaningful relationships,

In Christ,
