Parenting In The 21st Century

child 1

Are you a parent,or a guardian?If you have children,whether biological or foster,then you are blessed! Children are a gift from God and we need to take care of them.

When we receive gifts from our earthly fathers,we get so proud and happy,we take care of our gifts.We make sure that we keep them in safety.We value our gifts so much.

If we care for our earthly gifts this much,how much more are we supposed to care for our God-given gifts,the children whom the Lord has blessed us with?

King David advises us in the book of Psalms that;

Psalm 127:3-5

Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,
The fruit of the womb is a reward.

Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.
Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them;
They shall not be ashamed,
But shall speak with their enemies in the gate.

We have an obligation to bring up our children in godly ways so that when they grow up they will be able to make the right choices in their lives.

Parenting in this century has proved to be very challenging considering that there are many values that have changed in the last five decades.

For instance,the family was a whole unit,consisting of a male father,a female mother,and children.Mothers used to stay at home nursing their babies and fathers used to be breadwinners.Unfortunately,that’s not the case today.Today mothers leave their babies as early as three  months while they go to look for jobs.For many women,its not their wish to leave their babies,but due to maybe being single mothers,women empowerment,or not having a supporting partner,they are forced to go to work,spending most of their time at work while leaving their parenting roles and duties to the mercies of domestic workers and baby care schools.

Training children can have a positive or negative result.

What I have noticed is that children  necessarily don’t do what they hear,but they do what they see.Scolding your child when he/she has insulted your neighbor will not have effect compared to when your child sees you not insulting anyone.

We are going to look at an example from the Bible;

King David and his family.

King David came from a very humble background.He was once a shepherd boy who killed a bear and a lion to protect his sheep.He used skills he acquired from caring for the sheep to kill Goliath,the Philistine giant who defied the Lord’s armies.He was chosen and anointed by the Lord.He had a personal relationship with God and was successful in his career.

David’s house was in order until he saw a naked woman bathing, 2 Samuel 11.

Even after learning that she was a married woman,he still wanted to be  with her,and he ordered that she brought to him.

To cover up the sin,he killed her husband and married her.

Does this sound familiar?

David thought that adultery was a small sin,after all,he was not the first one to do it.He thought killing Uriah the Hittite was a small matter because he could replace him with another soldier and marry his wife,Bathsheba.

What he didn’t know or rather assumed is;

1.Adultery was a sin punishable by death.

2.Although he was not answerable to any man, he was answerable to God.

3.His dear children were watching.

The Lord addressed the matter as soon as it happened.He sent Nathan the prophet with the following verdict;

2 Samuel 12:7-

Then Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘I anointed you as king over Israel, and I spared you from the hand of Saul. I also gave you your master’s house, and put your master’s wives into your [b]care and under your protection, and I gave you the house (royal dynasty) of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would have given you much more! Why have you despised the word of the Lord by doing evil in His sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and have taken his wife to be your wife. You have killed him with the sword of the Ammonites. 10 Now, therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised Me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.’ 11 Thus says the Lord, ‘Behold, I will stir up evil against you from your [c]own household; and I will take your wives before your eyes and give them to your companion, and he will lie with your wives in [d]broad daylight. 12 Indeed you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and [e]in broad daylight.’” 13 David said to Nathan, “I have sinned against the Lord.” And Nathan said to David, “The Lord also has allowed your sin to pass [without further punishment]; you shall not die. 14 Nevertheless, because by this deed you have given [a great] opportunity to the enemies of the Lord to blaspheme [Him], the son that is born to you shall certainly die. 15 Then Nathan went [back] to his home.

The Deception of Sin is that there is time and the matter can be settled later.However that’s not the case,the consequences follow immediately.

I noticed from the above conversation,that the Lord could no longer talk to David directly as he used to,there was a communication break down.That is why he sent Nathan the prophet.

How this sin affected King David’s children:

1.He lost the first son that Bathsheba bore.

2.His son Amnon lusted for his own sister Tamar and later raped her.

2 Samuel 13

David was very angry about what Amnon did,but he did not take action.Probably part of the reason why he didn’t take action is that he also committed adultery with Bathsheba and did not know how to rebuke his son.But he was still the King and could have commanded Amnon to marry Tamar.Failure to take action made Tamar to live the rest of her life without a husband.

3.Absalom his third son took matters in his own hand,instead of waiting for the Lord to avenge Amnon,he killed him to revenge for his sisters rape.

King David lost Amnon and immediately Absalom had to take refuge in another country because he couldn’t stay in his country as a murderer.So he lost Absalom too.

4.Absalom desired to take the throne from his father ,and he did this forcefully out of the Lord’s will.Moreover,he laid with his father’s concubines in broad daylight.The result,he was killed by the sword when he was found hanging on a tree.King David lost another son.

2 Samuel 15-19

Absalom Hanging on the Oak Tree

The best way to avoid sin,is to flee away from it.A good example is given by Joseph when he ran away from Potiphars wife.It is possible to avoid sexual immorality.How we live OUR SEXUAL LIVES MATTER to God.

From King David’s example above,we see that the sin David committed did not just affect Uriah whom he killed and took his wife,but directly affected his children.

Training children is not just teaching them,but showing them what to do.

Whatever we do,that’s what we are showing our children,that is what we are training them to do.Even if we do it in secret,our children will do it in broad day light.

God bless you as you aspire to train and bring up your children in the Lord.

We are finishing the book of 2 Samuel this week.Feel free to join us in our Bible study as we begin the book of Romans.

The journal below is highly recommended,though its optional.

When studying your bible you may want to highlight using the following colours.At Good Morning Girls,we have meanings for different colours.We recommend this practise,because as you highlight,you spend more time on the word of God,thus you meditate more and the word is able to stick in your mind.

These are the highlighters I use:

  1. Stella, I enjoyed your post. Sin’s consequences are never worth the momentary pleasure, are they? But we are so easily deceived into thinking they are, when Satan wraps them in such pretty, appealing packages! Only God’s Word and seeking to please Him will protect us and keep us from being ignorant of his devices. Thanks for lots of good biblical truth!
