Welcome to our Bible study in the book of 2 Samuel,we are reading through the Bible,one chapter a day,five days in a week.
This week while reading through the book of 2 Samuel chapter one to four,I came across the deaths of King Saul,Asahel,Abner and Ish-Bosheth,amongst other soldiers which made me to think about death.
In chapter one,David receives news that King Saul ,his three sons and King Saul’s army had fallen with the sword.Instead of celebrating because his enemy has been killed,we see David mourning,weeping and fasting for his departed King.
For Jonathan his best friend,he lamented thus:
2 Samuel 1:26
26 I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan;
You have been very pleasant to me;
Your love to me was wonderful,
Surpassing the love of women.
Although Abner was Saul’s commander in chief and could’ve been David’s enemy as well,we see David was not happy to hear about his death.Infact he cursed Joab and his future generations,because it is Joab who killed Abner to revenge for his brother Asahel.
Ish-Bosheth could’ve been a threat to David because he was Saul’s surviving son,who was in good body condition,the other son Mephibosheth was disabled.But when David heard that he was killed,instead of rejoicing,he was so angry that he ordered his murderer’s to be killed.
Thinking about death is not bad,because when all is said and done,we will encounter death.
”Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.”
A time is coming when everything in this earth will be destroyed.All living things will die,decompose and completely come out the face of this world.
So, we are on this earth temporarily,just for sometime.
King Solomon advised us in the book of Ecclesiastes;that there is a time for everything.
2 A time to be born,
And a time to die;
There is a time we are brought into the world,in between birth and death is our activity time.When the time for death comes,we must die.Because our dying times are different,some people we know die before us while some will die after us.God is the only one who knows when we will die.
Death is sad because it separates us from our loved ones,from those who care for us.Death is sad because when someone dies,we will never see them again.Even when you preserve a body in the best morgue in town,the body cannot resemble the real person when they were alive.
That is why we should love and appreceiate people when they are alive.What people need in this life is love.Show someone love today.
If your loved ones have died and there is no one showing you love in this world,just remember that God loves you.He loves you so much that;
”He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
Also remember that though everyone may leave you,God will never leave you nor forsake you.Hebrews 13:5b
Recently,I received the death news of some people ,the two ladies I will mention below were full of life,youthfull and had surendered their lives to God.

Ever since I saw Janet Kanini Ikua’s campaigns and support for cancer,I was encouraged by her courage,enthusiasm and the fact that she was a born again believer of Jesus Christ.Facing stage four cancer,we prayed for her and at one time I was overjoyed when she told us about one year ago that she was healed.Little did we know that God had other plans for her and her beautiful family below.I together with fellow Kenyans received the shocking news about two months ago that Janet Kanini Ikua had died.

When someone whom you love dies,you will go through a process of mourning and grieving the departed.I thank God for the digital technology,though I was not present to bury these two I watched their burial ceremonies online.
Recently,last week to be precise,I attended a burial ceremony of my pastor’s mother.She was celebrated for being a prayerful woman,she was godfearing and was hardworking.She had lived for 91years.As we approached her grave at the cemetery,one of our church members kept on telling me;”you see when the trumpet will be blown on the last day,the people buried in these graves will be raised in the twinkling of an eye.But only if they had surrendered their lives to Jesus Christ.”And we discussed this on and on until it was time to lower the casket.As the casket was lowered to the grave,and the family started to cover her with red soil,I asked myself a question:when people rise up from the grave,how will their bodies look like?
Death humbles people.I asked my question above aloud and a lady pastor of AIC Church answered me.She said when we rise up our bodies will be transformed into another state.
At another funeral,this week,my fellow teacher’s husband had died.I heard my pastor quoting some verses from 1 Corithians 15 which I will share here.These verses answer my questions above.
For those who die in the Lord,the following verses are true:
42 So also is the resurrection of the dead. The body that is sown is perishable, it is raised in imperishable. 43 It is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory. It is sown in weakness, it is raised in power. 44 It is sown a natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. 45 And so it is written, “The first man Adam became a living being.”[d] The last Adam became a life-giving spirit.
51 Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed— 52 in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.
53 For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality. 54 When the perishable has been clothed with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality, then the saying that is written will come true: “Death has been swallowed up in victory.”[a]
56 The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
”So,believer’s do not need to fear death,because when we die,there is continuity.Though our bodies will perish in the soil,but our souls will be accepted in heaven.When the trumpet will be blown,we will be raised up in new glorious,spiritual bodies.But sinners can fear death,because it removes them from the luxuries of this world,and the future is bleak for them because after judgement,they will be thrown/cast in hell to be tormented with satan,and his angels-the demons.”Rev.Peter K.Njogah
The passage below explains this more clearly.
The Great White Throne Judgment
11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them. 12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God,[c] and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books. 13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works. 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.[d] 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.
Hell is not an interesting place,you will not even wish your worst enemy there.
That is why if you are not born again,I plead with you to take the step of faith and receive Jesus Christ as your Lord and personal saviour and you will inherit eternal life when you die.
We have just finished the first week of studying 2 Samuel.We still have four weeks to go.So,if you are joining us you can catch up very fast.
This journal is recommended,but its optional.
When studying your bible you may want to highlight using the following colours.At Good Morning Girls,we have meanings for different colours.We recommend this practise,because as you highlight,you spend more time on the word of God,thus you meditate more and the word is able to stick in your mind.
These are the highlighters I use:
