Does God Answer Prayer?

It is easy to ask this question when you have prayed about something and God did not answer or when He answered,he did what you did not expect. It can be challenging for a new believer, who might be expecting immediate answers.

For more experienced believers,we know that God answers prayer with a yes,no or wait.

As we begin the book of Luke in chapter one,we meet an old couple, Zacharias and Elizabeth whom God answered with wait. They had prayed for a child, yet it seems God was not answering them because they had grown old, beyond the age of conceiving a baby.

They came from priestly background, they were following the Lords commandments, and were living righteous and blameless lives. However, they did not have a child.

Luke 1:6-7

And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. But they had no child, because Elizabeth was barren, and they were both well advanced in years.

I think they must have prayed very many times, because they were old.By this time, probably they had stopped asking God for a child.Reason being Elizabeth had passed menopause, and generally both of them did not have much strength.

However,God had not forgotten them.He had them in mind, actually he had a good plan for their family.

If you are a believer and you are trusting God for something in your life,do not give up.Keep on praying, who knows if your prayers will be answered in your old age,or at a time least expected.

James 5:16 encourages us to pray with persistence.

16Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

We may say that God finally remembered them. The point is that finally God’s time reached.

Finally God appeared to them,

13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you shall call his name John. 14 And you will have joy and gladness, and many will rejoice at his birth. 15 For he will be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. 16 And he will turn many of the children of Israel to the Lord their God. 17 He will also go before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, ‘to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children,’[b] and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.”

Does God answer prayer?

Yes,he does.

God answered Zacharia and his wife, but after a very long time.

I have learnt that God answers us according to his purposes and will, not according to our will.

God had planned for Zacharias son to be born almost the time when Jesus was born. This  is because he had a plan for the child.

Let us not give up waiting on God,for He answers prayers.

God bless you.

  1. You are so right, stella – He asks us to wait but not wait blindly – wait on Him, and that makes all the difference. Bless you as you mentor. (just published a book on that you might like, btw) near you this morning at Jen’s from CA.
