Welcome to Good Morning Girls Kenya!
We are reading through the Bible, one chapter a day, five days a week.We started studying the book of Deuteronomy this week.Feel free to join us.
Have you noticed that from chapter one to five,Moses was revising old notes? This is because he was addressing a new generation of Israelites and he wanted them to understand very well how serious their relationship with God was.The older generation had rebelled against God,and the Lord got angry and declared that they,(including Moses) would not reach the promised land.
The only people who survived were Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh.
In chapter four,we see Moses really trying to reason with the Israelites.
In the beginning he tells them,
4 “Now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the judgments which I teach you to observe, that you may live, and go in and possess the land which the Lord God of your fathers is giving you. 2 You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the Lord your God which I command you.
Towards the end he summarizes thus,
39 Therefore know this day, and consider it in your heart, that the Lord Himself is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other. 40 You shall therefore keep His statutes and His commandments which I command you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which the Lord your God is giving you for all time.”
Moses decided to remind the Israelites ,the Lord’s chosen people of the testimonies, the statutes, and the judgments which the Lord had given them when they came out of Egypt. The Israelites were to live according to this principles once they reached the promised land,Canaan.
We also need to remind ourselves of these statutes since we are also children of God.We have an inheritance as children from our Father. These laws apply to all those who call themselves children of God,that is born again in the Spirit. This is because as children God,we have been set apart for noble use.We are supposed to be holy because He is holy.We are supposed to follow these laws for our own good.
John 1:12-13 says,
12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
Let us look at the ten commandments together.
6 ‘I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
7 ‘You shall have no other gods before Me.
8 ‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; 9 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, 10 but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
11 ‘You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain.
12 ‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. 15 And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm; therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.
16 ‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may be well with you in the land which the Lord your God is giving you.
17 ‘You shall not murder.
18 ‘You shall not commit adultery.
19 ‘You shall not steal.
20 ‘You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
21 ‘You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife; and you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, his male servant, his female servant, his ox, his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.’
We need to ask the Lord everyday to fill us with the Holy Spirit so that when we are tempted to sin,we find an escape route just the way Joseph fled from Potiphar’s wife.God knows that we are able to overcome sin. That is why he writes in.
26‘Thus you are to be holy to Me, for I the LORD am holy; and I have set you apart from the peoples to be Mine.
If you are a backslid-en christian,it is possible to make a decision to leave sin and start living a righteous life.Repent.You ask God in prayer to forgive you your sins and surrender your life to him.Do not go back to your former sin.
Maybe you are a christian or non-christian and you are wondering what being born in the Spirit means. It means you invite Jesus Christ into your heart, you confess your sins and declare that He is your Lord.
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
The blood of Jesus is able to wash away your sin.
It is wonderful to belong to God,to be called his children, his royal priesthood, his chosen people.Let us be holy by following the ten commandments.
Have you been following the ten commandments? If no,please do not harden your heart today.Listen to what God is saying. Please share your thoughts in the comments below.
