THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE FIRST BORN MALE SON

IMG-20150828-WA0001Last week when we started reading Numbers 1-5,I noticed that the Levites were not counted.
Numbers1:48
‘’For the Lord had spoken to Moses,saying,49Only you shall not number the tribe of Levi, neither take the sum of them among the children of Israel:50But you shall appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of testimony, and over all the vessels thereof, and over all things that belong to it:they shall bear the tabernacle, and all the vessels thereof, and they shall minister unto it,and shall encamp round about the tabernacle.’’
I already knew the Levites were the priestly clan, and I thought it was okay for God to put them separate to do his work. However, this subject got more interesting when God claimed that the Levites represented the first male offspring of every Israelite woman.
Numbers 3:45
‘’Take the Levites instead of all the firstborn among the children of Israel, and the cattle of the Levites instead of their cattle;and the Levites shall be mine:I am the Lord.’’
In Africa it is important to have sons,to continue the family lineage. The first born male son is an important figure, and is endowed with many responsibilities.Particulary from the Luo tribe,he is expected to perfom many cultural rituals, whereby if he is not present, the ritual may not take place. Some of these rituals occur when the parents are making their home, during funerals ,memorials and many more.So as I came across the above verse, Numbers 3:45,I studied with much interest, and came up with the following remarks about the first male offspring.
1.We should consecrate our firstborns to God.
Exodus13:2
‘’Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever opens the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast:it is mine.’’
What does it mean to consecrate?Your version could use sanctify or dedicate but they all mean the same thing. They all mean to make holy,to set apart,to devote to God.What does it mean practically for the firstborn to be ‘’the Lord’s’’?It means that he would be sacrificed to God,it means death. This is what gives meaning to God’s request of Abraham in Genesis 22.
Genesis 22:2
’And he said,Take now your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and get you into the land of Moriah;and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell you of.’’
The lord treated Isaac as Abraham’s first born. Here we can see that the Lord lays claim to the first and best of everything we have. The first born belongs to him and if he is to release them to us,we must buy them back.Something must be killed to replace our firstborns. In Abraham’s case, the Lord provided a ram, which was killed and sacrificed instead of Isaac.
In the same way,Israelites firstborns were redeemed(replaced) by the death of the Egyptians first borns.
First borns sons are to be consecrated to the Lord by their life, not their death.First born sons are to be devoted to God by a life of work and worship in the temple. One of the best examples is that of Samuel.
1 Samuel 1:11
‘’And she vowed a vow,and said,O Lord of hosts,if you will indeed look on the affliction of your handmaid, and remember me,and not forget your handmaid, but will give unto your handmaid a male child, then I will give him unto the Lord all the days of his life, and their shall no razor come upon his head.’’
This is the reason God claimed the Levites,he wanted people set apart for his service. We should therefore send our children to work for God.
2.We should accept Jesus Christ as God’s firstborn son who stands in as our redemption.
Jesus was the first born son of Joseph and Mary,Luke 2:7,22-23
Jesus has redeemed us by offering himself as a substitute. That’s the reason why he paid for our sins by dying on the cross.Because the only way to redeem fistborns was by death. Now we are also called firstborns and we have rights and priviledges which Jesus enjoys. We are co-heirs with Christ. You must believe in Jesus as God’s only son,and invite him to be Lord of your life to enjoy these priviledges. We see this clearly in 1 Peter 2:9,which says,
‘’But you are a chosen generation,a royal priesthood,a holy nation,a people for his own;that you should show forth the praises of him who has called you out of darkness into his marvelous light:’’
3.Live consecrated to God.
We need to be holy and acceptable before God.In the old testament, firstborns were substituted by pure, whole, undefiled animals, even Jesus who died for us was sinless hence pure.We need to be pure and undefiled. We are encouraged to do this in Romans 12:1-2.
’I beseech you therefore, brethren,by the mercies of God ,that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God,which is your reasonable service.2.And be not conformed to this world:but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect will of God.’’
So we need to keep our bodies holy. How,you may ask me.Avoid sexual immorality-fornication,adultery,homosexuality,pornographic videos and materials.
How do you renew your mind? You do this by reading God’s word every day.The word of God purifies our mind and cleanses us.
I invite you to join us as we read and study God’s word everyday on our facebook page,https://web.facebook.com/Good-Morning-Girls-in-Kenya-1617380475146758/?ref=bookmarks.
Chime in.
What are the other ways that we can keep our bodies holy?
How do we ensure that we do not conform to the patterns of this world?
God bless you as you,
Walk with the King!
Stella.
